"Mmmmmkay?"

I talk to a lot of people from all over the country. Midwest, Eastern seaboard, Southwest and Southern California (not including the occasional calls from a few of the southern states and Texas). Obviously I get to hear a lot of different dialects and speech mannerisms. Some, like the southern drawl, are rather distinctive. Other, like the one I just noticed today, are subtle, almost to the point of being unnoticeable.
This morning, I was talking to someone from the Midwest, Iowa specifically, and at the end of the call, the caller said "Mbye!". The "m" wasn't very noticeable but it was definitely an additional syllable on the word. So I decided to take an informal review of all of the callers to see if the "mbye" phenomenon was specifically a Midwest thing or was it further spread. So far, it seems to be a Midwest thing. Midwestern females specifically. Obviously, I've got a few more calls to take to be sure in my own little world but things are certainly pointing in that direction.
I doubt this little research project will continue of past today (unless I happen to be re-reading my journal) but it is mildly entertaining.
