I played soccer as a child and my usual position was goalie. I remember my coach at the time addressing the rest of the team telling them he wanted me to be "so bored he's counting the blades of grass" because me being bored meant the ball was on the other side of the field and in no danger of getting in our goal. And there were many games where I would do just that - count grass blades and rocks, sit down and watch my team drive the ball away again and again. Coach would yell and ask if I was bored then give me the thumbs up when I said I was. Being bored meant that everyone was doing their job.

I've taken that philosophy to my professional career. If I am sitting at my desk with nothing to do that means I've fixed all the things, made sure everything is running smoothly and everyone around me is busy doing their job. I take it as a point of pride.

Coworker said he wants to make it so we're not so bored on Fridays. My first thought was "be careful what you wish for."

I'd rather be bored.
