Do You See What I See

My best friend is, in short, a frugal techno junkie. He's got to have the best his money can buy so he carefully picks and chooses everything until he's mostly sure that a better deal cannot be had. And, even with this limitation, he's got a fairly good setup of very nice equipment in his house. Several very nice and relatively modern computers, wireless network, DSL, newer car with a recently installed remote starter, etc. And always looking to the next toy or trinket or gadget he'll procure.
I have recently realized that I have been following in his technological footsteps for quite a while now. He got DSL? I got DSL. Wireless? Two months later, me too. CD burner on his computer? Got one too. And now that he has a new computer and just finished installing the remote starter on his car, I find myself casually browsing the internet for, you guessed it, cheap computer parts and a remote starter for my vehicles.
Now, I don't follow him verbatim. I got a house before he did. I have kids; he doesn't. I bought a mini-disk player and he didn't. And I haven't kept up with him as far as the computer acquisitions (I get older and cheaper machines while he traditionally leans towards newer models). But I have been following in his footsteps for a lot of things.
Of course, he's got a lot more discretionary income than I do as he doesn't have house payment or kids to worry about. And now that his expenditures are rarely below the $100 mark and our money is getting tight, I think I'm going to have to seriously curtail my copy-cat attitude. Of course, I've got more than enough stuff to keep me happy for a while so that's not much of a concern.
Although I could use a newer machine...
